Modular classrooms that give schools and pupils flexibility to succeed

Imagine trying to teach or study in a damp, mouldy, cramped old mobile cabin that just doesn’t meet modern classroom standards. For many teachers and students this is still an everyday experience in overcrowded schools. But there is an affordable, flexible alternative that more education providers like Offley Endowed Primary School are discovering – and that’s the range of modern modular classrooms from Vertis.

Over the last 20 years, we designed and built more than 100 modular buildings for schools. Now imagine returning from the summer holidays to find that, in just 8 weeks, your classroom has been transformed into a light, airy and inspiring space. One that’s energy efficient with heating for winter and air conditioning for summer, a space that is a joy to teach in and to learn in.

Talking about his new Reception classroom completed over the summer holidays, Mr Edwards, Headteacher at Offley Endowed Primary School explains;

“The children love it, the teacher loves it, and the learning inside is fantastic. Vertis were really professional, competitively priced, and did a fantastic job. More importantly, they did it in the (8 week) timescale.”

The beauty of modular classroom designs

We are passionate about designing beautiful modular classrooms that are flexible, efficient, affordable and sustainable. Our aim is to create positive learning environments that empower teachers to help students reach their full potential. Vertis believes modular classrooms deliver significant benefits that can relieve many pressures on overcrowded and cash-strapped schools.

  • Flexible and scalable – we design our modular classrooms to fit your available space. By combining multiple interlocking modules, we can create units ranging from single and double classrooms to large multi-purpose buildings. The modular design also gives you the flexibility to reconfigure the layout or even relocate the modules to a new site in future.

  • Fast construction – we minimise disruption by prefabricating the structural insulated panels (SIPs) and other components off-site, ahead of construction. This enables us to install modules quickly and safely, even during term time. As a result, your teachers and pupils could be enjoying the benefits of beautiful new school buildings within just a few weeks of you contacting us.
  • Affordability – we know times are tough for many schools and your stakeholders will scrutinise any proposed capital expenditure. However, we believe you can demonstrate that Vertis classrooms offer excellent value for money, not least because you will own the building outright. Our prices include all material costs and building work by our professional crafts people and come with a 10-year structural guarantee and a 20-year roof guarantee.
  • Bespoke design – as well as the flexibility that comes with our seven standard designs for modular classrooms, we offer a bespoke design service. This gives you the freedom to customise not just the layout but also features like multiple stories, larger windows, and improved insulation. As well as building modular classrooms that are comfortable, functional and visually appealing, we can also ensure they fit in with their natural surroundings.
  • Built to last – we deliver durability as standard, building with sturdy construction materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions. This gives them a more permanent feel than portable cabins, even in temporary settings. Our buildings are also low maintenance and designed to provide at least 50 years of reliable service.
  • Environmentally friendly – because sustainability is vitally important to us and to your children’s future. All our modular classrooms come with an A-grade Energy Performance Certificate as standard, helping you save money and reduce your carbon emissions. We use sustainably sourced timber for our exteriors and donate 500sqm of woodland to the National Trust Plant a Tree campaign for every school building we complete.
  • Additional facilities – we can fit our modular buildings with a range of amenities, including plumbing, electrics, and combined heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. We are also experienced at designing modular classrooms that create a welcoming environment for all children, including those with complex physical and emotional needs.

Here’s how five schools solved their problems with our modular classrooms

  • Broadmead Lower School needed more space to accommodate extra tutorials, after school clubs and music lessons. They chose one of our affordable, multi-purpose buildings because of the flexibility it offered. That included the ability to move it later, if necessary, as the school expands.

  • Montbelle Primary School needed an extra classroom, fast, for its growing student population. It had to be cost effective and flexible to provide a comfortable learning space for all its students. They chose a Vertis modular classroom because it made good use of their substantial grounds.

  • King Edward VI Camp Hill Grammar School for Girls wanted a new building for their music department. But the only suitable location was an unusual shape. They chose Vertis because we could provide a bespoke design that fitted the space and matched its surroundings.

  • Dixie Grammar School wanted a new reception classroom, suitable for hands-on multi-sensory play and learning. We designed a building with two large classrooms, including built-in storage units, a dedicated wet area, non-slip vinyl floors, and sinks for adults and children. Both rooms open out onto the play area, making it safe and easy for the children to enjoy learning outside. “We chose Vertis for its use of sustainable and environmentally responsible materials in its constructions,” Richard Lynn, Headmaster at Dixie Grammar School.

  • Sawley Junior School was oversubscribed and needed two extra classrooms to take on more pupils. They wanted a light and airy space that was energy efficient, with wet and dry spaces and able to be fully equipped for IT. They chose two full-sized Vertis modular classrooms that are suitable for infants and juniors and came with inbuilt Wi-Fi networks.
